About the Band

We endeavour to promote brass band music and encourage participation in music for both young and old!

Highley Colliery Band is a social group as well as a musical organisation. We are proud of our friendly atmosphere and offer a warm welcome to visitors or newcomers. We have members of all ages, young and old. We run an introductory band (contact us for details), the younger members especially are encouraged to take their music grades, and we do all we can to enhance every players musical ability and enjoyment. We have a varied social calendar including days out to the seaside, going to concerts, barbecue nights, and even sponsored walks. The band performs at fetes, parks, concerts and corporate events throughout the country.

The band hold regular rehearsals at the Malt Shovel Public House, Woodhill Road, Highley. Visit our General Enquiries page for details.

The village of Highley is situated in the picturesque Severn Valley, approximately seven miles from Bridgnorth in rural south Shropshire.

For bookings, information on joining the band and for any further information you can contact us via the details on the Contact page.

Highley Colliery Band are proud members of the British Federation of Brass Bands.

Musical Director: Roy Osborne CT ABRSM

Roy was appointed as MD to Highley Colliery Band in February 2011. Roy has been associated with the band for several years now, deputising on Soprano cornet at many concerts. He brings with him over 50 years of brass band experience.

Roy successfully completed a teachers instrumental training course run by the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music. In 1993 he passed 'Theory and History of Music' papers to LRSM diploma level through an Open University course. In 1997 he joined the National Association of Brass Band Conductors.

His banding days started in 1958, playing 3rd cornet for Bromsgrove Town Band. His musical career took him on to play Soprano cornet for Quarry Bank Silver Prize Band which, over several years, sponsors and name changes became Banks's Brewery Championship Section Band. He left Banks's in 1988 and eventually joined Stourport on Severn Brass Band. Roy continues to enjoy playing Soprano cornet when not conducting the band.
